Our Lady of mercy Girls Secondary School Shauri Moyo was established in 2008 by the parents of Our Lady of Mercy Primary School Shauri Moyo. The initiative to start the girls' secondary school was necessitated by the large number of standard eight girl-child graduates who were not absorbed into secondary schools after form one selection.
Our Lady of Mercy Girls Primary School was established in the year 1952 by the sisters of Mercy as a girls only school, situated in the slums of Shauri Moyoa low class estate in Eastlands, 60% of the girls who pass through this school do not secure form 1 chances. That is why the parents resolved to start this school. The school has a population of 1345 students, in the normal primary school, 15 pupils in the special unit and 60 in preunit. The performance of the school is average with a mean score of 279.22 marks. All pupils who fail to get a chance in county schools are assured of space at Our Lady of Mercy of Mercy Girls Secondary School - Shauri Moyo.
Some of the girls were admitted to distance day schools that required a lot of resources in terms of logistics which is well above the reach of most residents, this being an economically challenged area.
The school was registered in May 2008 as a girls only secondary school with an initial population of 32 students. Our Lady of Mercy Girls Secondary School is the only girls school in Kamukunji Sub-county of Nairobi county. The enrollment in the school has risen to 502 students this year (2016) and is projected to rise even further. The school has been re-registered now as a full boarding girls school with three streams.
